Message From Your BIA/OC President
This summer, BIA/OC has two fun events to take advantage of the beautiful Southern California weather we’ve been having. On Thursday July 22, join us for a Central Park West model home tour and networking. Come visit the newest chapter of homes now unveiled at Lennar’s Central Park West. Members of the CPW design team will be on hand to answer questions and give you a behind the scenes look at the 20 new models we’ve been waiting over a year to see! On Friday August 27th, enjoy some fun in the sun at the 2nd Annual Kickball tournament at the Ralph Clark Regional Park in Fullerton. What better way to network than over a friendly game of kickball?! Teams are forming now, so sign up your office today. Individuals are welcome! Government Affairs

BIA/OC continues to work hard for your industry by removing governmental barriers to recovery. Here are just a few of the major successes we have recently accomplished:
Contact:  Bryan Starr

1. Major County Park Fee Reductions - In June OC Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to support a BIA/OC proposal that reduced municipal park dedication in-lieu (Quimby) fees by as much as 56%! BIA/OC submitted the proposal to the County this spring and moved quickly to ensure its success. This is a huge benefit to our members with the potential to save hundreds of thousands of dollars for builders and developers throughout the County.

2. OC Sanitation District Fees Reduced by 35% - The Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) Board of Directors voted to reduce Capital Facilities Connection Charges (CFCCs) by 35%. This reduction will account for a reduction of up to $2,500 per unit in most cases; meaning a typical 100 unit project would save $250,000 on development fees and applies to all OCSD service areas spanning most of the central and northern parts of OC.

3. OCFA Development Fee Increases Blocked - In a successful team effort, BIA/OC and our coalition partners were successful in blocking a significant development services fee increase by the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA). Despite the recommendations of the OCFA Finance Committee, the OCFA Board of Directors rejected the fee increase and directed staff to balance the 2010-11 budget without fee hikes. It should be noted that these increases have been annual and automatic for many years. This action of the OCFA Board marks a departure from OCFA policy and will create an opportunity for financial reform that will benefit our industry.

4. BIA/OC Development Impact Fee Deferral - The OCSD and the County of Orange deferral programs have been extended for an additional year and the City of Costa Mesa recently approved the permanent deferral of development impact fees. This effort continues to assist our members by allowing them to pay development impact fees at the end of the development process.

Benefits of Membership for You & Your Company or Why did you join BIA: Cannibal Central Headhunters has been a BIA member for several years. Our company has benefited in many ways, but especially from the excellent overall support, responsive services for members, political watch-dogging, networking and education. I believe now, more than ever, is an important time to be a member of BIA, as our industry is in the early stages of recovery; an important time for industry professionals to be current on industry trends, re-connecting with associates and colleagues to best prepare for the recovery and when we return to some form of normalcy.

Can you share any specific examples or stories of how BIA/OC has helped your company's bottom line, given you exclusive industry insider info/education, or provided networking opportunities that resulted in new business?: Having our company listed in the BIA directory has always been a strong source of prospective clients. I am also a firm believer that companies like to do business with companies that support their industry, and one of those ways of supporting your industry is by being a member of an industry trade association.

Favorite BIA event this year or which event are you looking forward to?: A recent AOG Committee event that was held at Big Canyon Country Club. The speakers were top in their field, providing extremely helpful insight into many aspects of what challenges homebuilders are facing today and the latest trends and challenges in planning successful projects and tackling the latest and greatest hurdles. Just like most of us, I am always interested in getting the most current economic outlook information available and look forward to any and all information that can help us plan for re-igniting our industry.
